How Invisalign Works To Straighten Teeth

Invisalign treatment is a popular choice for individuals looking to straighten their teeth without the use of traditional metal braces. This innovative orthodontic treatment involves the use of clear aligners that gradually shift the teeth into the desired position. Made of a patented thermoplastic material called SmartTrack®, these aligners are virtually invisible and offer a discreet way to achieve a confident smile.

Each set of aligners in the Invisalign treatment series is designed to move the teeth slightly closer to the desired position. This gentle and steady progression allows for a comfortable and effective teeth straightening process. Before starting Invisalign, a comprehensive consultation is necessary to create a customized digital treatment plan. This plan showcases the step-by-step transformation of the patient’s smile, providing a clear understanding of the journey towards straighter teeth.

During the consultation, digital scans, X-rays, and photos are taken to create accurate models. These models are then used to manufacture the aligners with precision in the Invisalign laboratory. The aligners fit snugly over the teeth and should be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. They can be easily removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, providing convenience and flexibility throughout the treatment process.

The Invisalign system provided by our excellent and top-notch orthodontics team is a popular choice for individuals seeking an alternative to traditional braces. It offers the benefits of invisible braces, allowing patients to straighten their teeth discreetly. With its removable and comfortable design, Invisalign makes it easier for patients to maintain their oral hygiene compared to traditional braces. It is a modern and effective solution for those looking to achieve a straighter smile.

Invisalign Aligners

Is Invisalign Right for You?

Invisalign is most effective for patients with mild to moderate teeth misalignment issues, such as crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Severe misalignment may require alternative treatment options. It is important to consult with a skilled and experienced dentist (who may offer orthodontic treatment but it’s always better to go to someone who specialized in the orthodontic field) or an orthodontist to determine if Invisalign is the right solution for your specific needs.

  1. Schedule a consultation with an Invisalign provider to discuss your treatment goals.
  2. Undergo a thorough examination, including digital scans, X-rays, and photos.
  3. Review the customized digital treatment plan to understand the step-by-step transformation of your smile.
  4. Begin wearing the aligners as instructed and attend regular check-ups to monitor progress.
  5. Enjoy the benefits of Invisalign as your teeth gradually move into their desired position.

Benefits of Invisalign For Washington Residents

When it comes to teeth straightening, Invisalign offers a range of benefits that make it an attractive option for many patients. One of the main advantages is the clear, almost invisible appearance of the aligners, ensuring a discreet treatment experience. Unlike traditional braces, which can be noticeable and affect the wearer’s confidence, Invisalign aligners are barely noticeable, allowing patients to maintain their natural smile throughout the treatment process.

Another significant benefit of Invisalign is the removable nature of the aligners. Unlike fixed braces, which are permanently attached to the teeth, Invisalign aligners can be easily removed for eating and drinking. This means that patients can continue to enjoy their favorite foods without any restrictions. Moreover, the ability to remove the aligners also facilitates regular oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, ensuring optimal oral health throughout the treatment.

In addition to the aesthetic and practical advantages, Invisalign can also have positive effects on overall oral health. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, as there are fewer spaces for plaque and food particles to accumulate. Improved oral hygiene can lead to a reduction in the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Furthermore, Invisalign can help address mild to moderate alignment issues such as crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites, improving the overall functionality of the teeth and jaw.

Overall, Invisalign offers a convenient, comfortable, and effective method for straightening teeth. However, it is essential to consult with a skilled and reliable dentist or orthodontist to ensure the best results. By selecting an experienced professional, patients can benefit from personalized care and the expertise needed to achieve their desired smile transformation.

Finding the Right Invisalign Orthodontist in Shoreline

When it comes to Invisalign treatment, finding the right dentist or orthodontist is crucial for a successful outcome. With so many options available, it’s important to do thorough research and consider various factors to ensure you receive the best possible care.

Understanding Orthodontic Care

Orthodontic Care Spain Orthodontics

What is Orthodontic Care?

Orthodontic care is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The primary goal of orthodontic treatment is to correct issues related to teeth alignment, jaw positioning, and bite functionality. By addressing these concerns, orthodontic care can enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of the teeth and jaws.

Common Orthodontic Issues

Orthodontic issues can vary widely, but some of the most common problems include:

  • Crooked or Misaligned Teeth: This occurs when the teeth are not properly aligned, which can affect the appearance of the smile and make oral hygiene more challenging.
  • Overcrowding: Overcrowding happens when there is insufficient space in the jaw to accommodate all the teeth. This can lead to overlapping or twisted teeth and may impact oral health.
  • Malocclusion: Malocclusion refers to a misalignment of the upper and lower jaws, resulting in an improper bite. This can lead to difficulties with chewing, speaking, and even breathing.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment offers numerous benefits beyond just aesthetic improvements. Some of the key advantages include:

  • Enhanced Oral Health: Straighter teeth are easier to clean and maintain, reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
  • Improved Functionality: Properly aligned teeth and jaws can enhance bite functionality, making it easier to chew food and speak clearly.
  • Boosted Confidence: Orthodontic treatment can significantly improve the appearance of the smile, boosting self-esteem and confidence.
  • Long-Term Stability: Orthodontic care aims to create a stable and balanced occlusion, minimizing the risk of future dental problems and improving long-term oral health.

The Importance of Quality Orthodontic Care

Choosing a Reputable Orthodontic Provider

When it comes to orthodontic care, the quality of the treatment and the expertise of the orthodontic provider are of paramount importance. It is essential to choose a reputable orthodontic clinic that prioritizes patient care and employs highly skilled professionals. Quality orthodontic care ensures that you receive accurate diagnoses, effective treatment plans, and optimal outcomes.

Impact on Treatment Outcomes and Patient Satisfaction

Quality orthodontic care significantly influences treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction. Skilled orthodontists with years of experience understand the complexities of various orthodontic issues and can tailor treatment plans to meet individual needs. They use advanced techniques and state-of-the-art technology to ensure precise and efficient treatment.

Moreover, quality care fosters a positive patient experience. Orthodontic treatment often requires multiple visits over an extended period, and a comfortable and supportive environment plays a vital role in patient satisfaction. By choosing a reputable orthodontic provider, you can have confidence in the treatment process, knowing that your comfort and well-being are a priority.

Long-Term Benefits of Investing in Quality Orthodontic Care

Investing in quality orthodontic care yields numerous long-term benefits. Beyond the immediate cosmetic improvements, properly aligned teeth and jaws contribute to overall oral health and stability. Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum disease. Proper bite alignment also minimizes the strain on jaw joints, reducing the likelihood of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and related discomfort.

Furthermore, investing in quality orthodontic care can save you time and money in the long run. By addressing orthodontic issues promptly and effectively, you can prevent more extensive dental treatments or corrective measures later on.

Can Invisalign Widen My Smile?

Have you ever wondered, “Can Invisalign widen my smile?” The answer is yes, although it isn’t successful in every instance. The ability of Invisalign to create a wider smile depends on the severity of the initial alignment problem being corrected. Orthodontics on the shoreline can help address various dental issues, including crowding, spacing, and misalignment of the teeth.

Understanding a Narrow Smile

If you have ever been told you have a little smile, you may be interested in whether Invisalign® can Invisalign widen my smile widen your smile?. Let’s begin with the basic definition of a little smile. If you smile and there are six or fewer teeth visible, you may have a little smile.

A post shared by Spain Orthodontics (@spainortho)

Although having a narrow smile is fairly common, not everyone is satisfied with their overall appearance. The defining characteristic is the palate and upper jaw being more tapered, forming almost a slight point at the front. The normal palate looks like a “U,” whereas the narrow mouth may look more like a “V” shape.

As with many facial attributes, a narrow smile is often a hereditary trait. There can also be some narrowing with age, as teeth may begin to shift inward, narrowing the maxillary arch. This can also cause the cheeks to gain a sunken look.

In some extreme cases, a little smile may cause orthodontic issues such as overbite, underbite, and crossbite. These malocclusions may also contribute to breathing problems if the jaw alignment does not allow the mouth to close fully. Other problems with speech may also be a result of a narrow smile, such as difficulty with the pronunciation of certain words or a lisp.

Palatal Expanders Might Be an Option

When the problem is the actual shape of the palate, Invisalign or braces may not be effective in correcting a narrow smile. In those instances, other orthodontic measures must be taken before the alignment issues can be addressed.

Correcting a Narrow Smile in Children

While not every little smile can present dental problems, some do. When it is noticed during a child’s initial examination, it can be corrected early to prevent any further problems.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that a child see an orthodontist by the time they reach age seven. The specific age is based on natural growth patterns for children. At age seven, they have lost most of the primary (baby) teeth and have a good number of adult teeth in place or poised to erupt. That is the prime time to correct potential problems and use the child’s natural growth to make treatment easier.

One of the treatment methods in use for children ages 7 to 12 is palatal expanders. This is an adjustable device that attaches to the back teeth and extends across the roof of the mouth. By gradually expanding the device outward, the upper jaw bone is widened. Because the doctor can use the natural growth of the child, this procedure is safe and effective.

Palatal Expanders for Adults

Once a child is around 13 years old, the bones in their face and jaw begin to fuse permanently, making the expansion of the palate a bit more intense than with younger patients. Rather than the retainer-like palatal expander, adults require oral surgery or an implant-supported device.

In cases where the palate requires expansion, that must be accomplished before braces or Invisalign will be effective in correcting alignment issues.

Can Invisalign Widen My Smile

Can Invisalign Widen Your Smile — Yes

Can Invisalign widen your smile? To understand if Invisalign can widen your smile, you need to have a base understanding of how Invisalign works. This almost invisible tray alignment system uses the principle of constant, gentle pressure to create force. The force is what moves teeth into alignment.

Additional force can be applied using SmartForce® attachments. These small tabs attach directly to teeth and add pressure. The doctor places the tabs so they can act as handles for the tray aligners. This guided pressure can move teeth quicker. The ultimate goal is to achieve better tooth alignment and a wider smile.

A post shared by Spain Orthodontics (@spainortho)

Unfortunately, the success of Invisalign depends on the original malocclusion. In some instances, it will not be as effective as you may desire. If the problem is orthodontic, Invisalign can be very effective. If the problem is structurally based, Invisalign may create a better appearance. However, it cannot move or correct bone structure.

As Invisalign works to straighten your teeth, they will become less crowded. Crooked teeth will be aligned side by side and maintain proper spacing. This alone can create the appearance of a wider smile. Another advantage of Invisalign treatment is the degree of self-esteem and confidence you will have with a straight and beautiful smile. This small fact may cause a wider smile by removing any embarrassment that you may have had.

Are Braces the Better Option for You?

Although knowing that Invisalign can widen your smile, in some instances, traditional braces may be the better option. Because braces can apply more force, they may be recommended by the doctor. Invisalign works using pressure or by pushing teeth into alignment. Braces create force by using tension which pulls teeth into alignment.

The simple act of pulling rather than gently pushing allows a more aggressive approach to correct serious malocclusions.

Limitations of Both Braces and Invisalign

At times, the information may seem to be conflicting, and this is because every smile is different. Even in identical twins, the treatment recommendations may be different from one another.

Although braces and Invisalign can move teeth into alignment and create the appearance of a wider smile, they cannot change the shape of the arch (roof of the mouth or palate). When caught early, the treatment can be unobtrusive and effective and set a child up for a great smile. In adults, when palatal expansion is necessary, the process requires much more than Invisalign to widen a smile.

I love Spain orthodontics. I had a unusual case and Dr. Spain was able to tackle head on when others didn’t listen to my concerns. I will be referring everyone and including my own to this office. We were also very impressed with Gina the coordinator! I truly wish there were more offices like this around! Big thank you to everyone at Dr. Spain’s office. Brandon & Jennifer J.

Deshuan Martin

I’ve moved around a lot and I’ve had a few different orthodontist, but let me say, Spain Orthodontics is not only the best orthodontist, but the best place in the world when it comes to patient service. The entire staff is amazing. They are helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. If something were to happen to me, I want the staff at Spain Orthodontist to adopt and raise my children for me.

And don’t get me started on Eric. He walks me through the entire process, and it’s a genuine pleasure to work with him.

I am deeply saddened that I can only compensate them with monetary value. Spain Orthodontics, is a preview of heaven. 5 stars is an understatement.

My son was referred by our family dentist to Spain Orthodontics for an underbite treatment. Dr. Spain and his whole team from day one to this day have always been professional, patient and knowledgeable. The office is very clean, modernized, and utilizes state of the art equipments, and they always have the front office decorated according to the holidays. There is also a rewards station that helps motivate children to keep a good habit with their braces. The front office staff are continuously friendly and kind. Foods to Eat with Braces

Get ready to discover a wide range of food to eat with braces! These tasty and braces-friendly foods in this article will help you explore delicious options you can safely indulge in with your new braces. Brace yourself for a delightful experience! With the guidance of orthodontics in Shoreline, you can confidently navigate your orthodontic journey while still enjoying various delicious meals with this list of foods to eat with braces.

First Things First — Foods to Avoid

You should have a list to post on your refrigerator. If not, or if you lost it, you may print it from here. And with that — on to the good stuff.

Foods to Eat with Braces — the Good Stuff

The BEST news is that you can still eat pizza with braces. We do recommend that you stick to the softer crust or pan-style pizza. Also, be aware of topping selections. Bacon tastes incredible on pizza, but the small crunchy bits can damage your brackets and wires or get stuck. Load up on soft topping choices and lighten crunchy, hard toppings. Foods to Eat with Braces.

Also on the list of good stuff:

  • Fish (tuna, crab cakes, and sushi count too)
  • Chicken noodle soup
  • Yogurt
  • Cooked fruits and veggies (hello, apple pie!)
  • Eggs
  • Smoothies (get your fresh fruits here)
  • Dairy, including soft cheeses and pudding
  • Most bread and muffins (avoid nuts and seeds)
  • Most meats and poultry (small bites are more manageable)
  • Pasta and rice
  • Soft fruits (applesauce, bananas, and juice)
  • Sandwiches and toast
  • SOFT tacos and burritos
  • Most cold cereals (avoid granola-based or super crunchy cereals)
  • Hot cereals
  • Salads (Make sure raw veggies are cut small)

We hear you. Everything on the list is nutritious and “good for you” food. You want the really good stuff. Snacks. Just because you have braces doesn’t mean you can’t have snacks. Here are some recommended Foods to Eat with Braces, which include soft fruits, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies

The Better Stuff — Snacks

Better tasting, at least. Not so much, nutritionally speaking. But this is the list you’ve been waiting for.

Please be careful, but enjoy any of these and similar snack choices:

  • Chocolate (More about this later)
  • Cakes (Twinkies count)
  • Ice cream and popsicles
  • Cookies and crackers (Avoid super crunchy ones and cookies with nuts)
  • Potato chips (Avoid restaurant-style, hard types)
  • Cheetos and Pirate Booty
  • Non-carbonated, low-sugar drinks

Chocolate — we did promise a more extensive list.

  • Plain M&Ms
  • Plain Hershey’s Kisses
  • 3 Musketeer bars
  • Kit Kat bars
  • Reese’s Cups and Reese’s Pieces
  • Snow Caps
  • Nestle Crunch bars
  • Any chocolate bars without nuts and caramel

Do not freeze your chocolate, as that can damage your wires. We hope you are beginning to realize that having braces isn’t the absolute end of civilization. Watching what you eat is an excellent life-long practice, so consider this an Olympic training period.

Dental Cleanings and General Care

One of the most essential parts of having braces is maintaining good oral hygiene. Brush regularly and make sure to remove food particles that may get stuck in the wires and brackets. If you can’t brush right after eating, rinse with water or mouthwash to flush out loose particles.

Get regular checkups during your treatment period in addition to your orthodontic adjustment appointments.

15 Questions To Ask Your Orthodontist About Invisalign

The choice between traditional braces and Invisalign® can be daunting if you don’t understand how either treatment works. That’s why it’s important to have questions to ask your orthodontist about Invisalign® before you take a seat in the dental chair.

Spain Orthodontics wants to help you by answering some of the most common questions for you below.

How does Invisalign® work?

Questions To Ask Your Orthodontist About Invisalign

One of the first questions to ask your orthodontist about Invisalign® is how does it work? Invisalign® is a series of clear removable aligner trays that gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment over a period of time. You wear the aligners for 22 hours a day and switch to a new set every two weeks to begin a new stage of shifting. Invisalign® fixes problems such as overcrowding, overbite, underbite, crossbite, gaps or spaces between teeth, and crookedness.

How will my treatment begin?

Your treatment begins by setting up a complimentary consultation to see if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®. The orthodontist will inspect your teeth and jawbone. X-rays will be taken. An impression of your teeth will be made to create a 3D model that helps the orthodontist create a custom set of aligners specifically for your teeth and to track your progress.

What can disqualify me from getting Invisalign®?

While most patients do qualify to use Invisalign®, there are some reasons why a patient may not be a good candidate. If you smoke or use tobacco, you could be disqualified if you refuse to quit during treatment as tobacco products can stain or damage the aligners. People who have smaller teeth than normal or have other issues such as tooth decay may not be able to use Invisalign®. Invisalign® may also not be right for you if you have dental implants, a bridge, or are unwilling to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day.

How long does Invisalign® take?

The duration of Invisalign® treatment generally lasts between 10 to 15 months or sooner depending on the severity of your dental problems. You should start seeing results with Invisalign® after just a few weeks of treatment. Failure to wear Invisalign® for 22 hours a day and switch to the new set every two weeks will cause setbacks in your treatment.

How much does Invisalign® cost?

This is also one of the most common questions to ask your orthodontist about Invisalign®. The cost of Invisalign® ranges between $3,000 and $8,000 or more depending on what kind of treatment you need. Dental insurance generally covers at least part of Invisalign® costs. Orthodontists also offer low payment plans and will work with just about any budget.

Do I need to visit the orthodontist during treatment?

15 Questions To Ask Your Orthodontist About Invisalign

While Invisalign® reduces the number of follow-up appointments compared to braces, you should schedule one every two or three months so the orthodontist can check on your progress and make changes to your treatment if necessary. Don’t forget to also see your dentist for a routine check-up and cleaning every six months.

What happens if I break or lose my aligners?

Breaking or losing aligners is a common occurrence. Patients sometimes misplace their aligners instead of storing them properly in their case. Some break it while playing sports because they improperly used Invisalign® instead of an actual mouthguard. In any case, you can replace aligners for an extra cost, usually between $50 to $100.

How do I clean Invisalign®?

15 Questions To Ask Your Orthodontist About Invisalign

There are several ways to clean Invisalign®, a common way being by gently brushing them with a soft baby toothbrush. You can also use specialized products such as Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals and Steraligner to soak your aligner trays. Brush your teeth and clean your aligners after every meal if possible, and definitely before you go to bed at night and after you wake up in the morning.

Are there any dietary restrictions with Invisalign®?

There are no dietary restrictions while using Invisalign®. Just make sure you remove the aligners before you eat. Clean your teeth and the aligners before putting them back in your mouth.

Is there a difference between Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen®?

There are minor differences between the two. Invisalign Teen® features a blue dot that fades away if your teen is consistently wearing the aligners, allowing you to check if they are keeping up with their treatment. Invisalign Teen® also comes with more aligners because teens will be teens.

Is Invisalign® better than traditional metal braces?

Invisalign Or Braces?

This is one of the best questions to ask your orthodontist about Invisalign®. Traditional metal braces require you to make lifestyle changes such as dietary restrictions and extra time spent on your oral care routine. They are also visible to others and are not removable. Invisalign® is virtually invisible, requires no dietary restrictions, is removable, and is easier to clean. Both treatments cost about the same and take about the same amount of time to complete.

Is Invisalign® painful or uncomfortable?

Invisalign® puts pressure on your teeth in order to shift them into alignment. Therefore, you may feel discomfort, especially after beginning each set of aligners. The aligners are made to feel as comfortable as possible in your mouth and should not harm your mouth tissues. If your aligners are irritating your tissues, talk to your orthodontist about possible adjustments.

What happens if my teeth are not tracking properly?

Your aligners could be too tight or may not fit your teeth correctly. Inform your orthodontist if you are experiencing this problem. Adjustments may need to be made. You can also use a device called “chewies” to close any air bubbles.

Can I switch to braces if Invisalign® isn’t working for me?

If Invisalign® is not working for you, you can easily make the switch to braces.

Does Invisalign® include additional aligners?

Invisalign® treatment generally includes extra aligners at no additional cost and there is a comprehensive option allowing for additional aligners for up to five years.

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Almost everyone is a good candidate for Invisalign. It wasn’t always that way, and you may have been told in the past that Invisalign® couldn’t help you. Since its creation, Invisalign®’s technology has seen improvements that make it suitable to treat almost all malocclusions.

Invisalign® Technology is Amazing

Align Technology, the creators of Invisalign®, continue to improve this treatment method. In 1999, when Invisalign® was new, it was only good for correcting minor alignment problems. Patients with more serious issues were treated with traditional metal braces.

In order to create a more reliable material to make their tray aligners, Align Technology developed their patented SmartTrack® material. Researchers spent 8 years completing strenuous testing on more than 260 different materials. No other tray aligner system uses this unique, durable material.

Another great tool in the Invisalign® arsenal is the iTero Element® scanner. This highly accurate, 3D scanner creates an interactive virtual “map” of your mouth. This means no goopy impressions and a much better alignment fit. With the ability to take 6,000 images per second, it is much quicker than molds too! The iTero scanner can show a predicted outcome image, and also track changes at each appointment.

Because of these technological advances and more, Invisalign® is capable of correcting many different alignment problems.

Are You a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

In most cases, yes, you are a good candidate for Invisalign treatment. In fact, the list of alignment issues that Invisalign® can reliably correct include:

  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Gap teeth
  • Crowding
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Crooked teeth

While there are a few problems that won’t respond well to Invisalign® treatment, that list gets smaller with new developments from Align Technology.

Invisalign® works using constant, gentle pressure to shift teeth into proper alignment. Patients should wear trays for 20 to 22 hours each day. Since patients remove the trays for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene, there are no dietary limitations. Each tray set is worn for about two weeks, then patients shift into the next set in the sequence.

With the addition of Invisalign First® and Invisalign Teen®, treatment can begin for children as young as seven! The versatility of Invisalign® is growing daily.

Step-by-Step Guide for Cleaning Invisalign®

In our Step-by-Step Guide for Cleaning Invisalign®, we’ll help you get into a good routine of caring for your tray’s and clear aligners. Part of the success of Invisalign® is attributed to the dedication of patients like you who read these articles and actually use the information to better help your smile and keep progressing through your orthodontic treatment at Spain Orthodontics here in Shoreline, Washington. This article is for those of you who have dedicated time and effort and shown commitment to this treatment method. All in all, we’re here to help illuminate and get you ready to show off your perfect smile.

Why Cleaning your Tray Aligners is Important

Although your morning and evening routine won’t change much with Invisalign®, there are some new habits you should develop.

One habit you’ll need is to rinse your aligners when you remove them for meals and drinking. Gently brushing your aligners under running water with a soft bristle toothbrush is optimal. Always store your alignment trays in the case when they are not in your mouth.

Brush your teeth before reinserting your trays after a meal.

Possibly the most important new habit you’ll need is soaking your trays daily. There are many methods that can be used to give your trays a deep clean.

Step-by-Step Guide for Cleaning Invisalign®

Determining the time you soak your trays is the first step for all the below soaking methods. Many orthodontists recommend soaking your trays during your daily shower but again this is up to you, the user and patient. However, this normally allows enough time for adequate soaking and causes less interruption in your normal routine. Again though, it’s your life so you do what you need depending on your own routine. Your aligners or retainers can be cleaned in only 15 to 20 minutes so, whether you’re showering, getting dressed or having breakfast, you decide when to clean them but, just remember to clean them please!

Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals

There are quick and effective options to clean your Invisalign clear aligners. One way is with Invisalign’s Aligner Cleaning Foam and it works to freshen breath, keep your retainers and aligners odor free and of course, designed by Invisalign themselves. Another option are cleaning crystals, which of course is also brand name and top of the line, Invisalign Cleaning Crystals. Not only do they work wonders but these don’t even require going to the practice, just order from wherever you are and receive in a few days. Also, some dental and orthodontic offices, retail stores, pharmacies, and online retailers have these but we’ve found the best one’s from Invisalign and these will entirely clean your aligner. Just soak your aligners in the provided trays for 10 to 20 minutes.

Let’s take a look at some of the best and easiest ways to keep you fresh throughout the day and your smile looking beautiful!

Invisalign’s Crystal Cleaning Magic

  1. Remove aligner trays and rinse
  2. Fill a container or small bowl with enough lukewarm water to cover trays
  3. Mix Crystals with water
  4. Insert trays and soak for 10 to 20 minutes

Denture/Retainer Tablets

Denture or retainer tablets can be used, although you should avoid tablets with added coloring as they can tint your trays.

  1. Remove aligner trays and rinse
  2. Fill a small bowl or container with enough water to cover trays
  3. Dissolve the denture and retainer cleaning tablet in the water (no need to wait, the foaming action helps clean)
  4. Insert trays and soak for 10 to 20 minutes

Baking Soda and Water

A quick and easy alternative to prepackaged cleansers is baking soda, which most people already have in their homes. This method does have a longer recommended soaking time but is highly effective.

  1. Remove aligner trays and rinse
  2. Fill a container or small bowl with enough warm water to cover trays
  3. Dissolve one teaspoon of baking soda in the water
  4. Insert trays and soak for 20 to 30 minutes

Vinegar and Water

Vinegar is also a very effective natural cleanser. One caution is that you need to rinse the trays really well after using this method or you will be tasting vinegar all day.

  1. Remove aligner trays and rinse
  2. Fill a container with a 50/50 mix of warm water and distilled white vinegar
  3. Insert trays and soak for 20 to 30 minutes

Final Notes

Remember to use only lukewarm water when soaking or rinsing your trays. Hot water can cause damage to the trays so just make a mental note not to use hot water or put your aligners in any boiling pot of water. That would be no good but we have heard stories about this unfortunately.

When cleaning your trays and aligners, always use a soft-bristled brush on your aligners. Hard bristles may cause scratches and make the trays less transparent which exposes the invisible nature of Invisalign, so keep that in mind. Following your soak, you should rinse the trays well and brush them gently to remove cleanser residue.

If you don’t have access to any of the above methods (we did make sure to find the best and most affordable and easily accessible Invisalign options for you), cleaning your trays with a drop of disinfectant soap or dish soap will work in a pinch. Simply add a drop to your toothbrush and gently brush the trays and make sure to rinse them thoroughly so you don’t have soap in your mouth. Again though, the links above provide you with affordable, brand name, easy to use options to keep your smile and your aligners in the best shape possible.

How to Floss with Braces

When you first got your braces, a technician probably gave you a quick lesson on how to floss with braces. You may remember it in great detail, or you may have only been half-listening. Perhaps you just want to make sure you are doing it correctly.

Flossing with braces is more difficult because of the wires and brackets. We’ve compiled some user-friendly tips and tricks that should help you floss more efficiently.

Why Knowing How to Floss with Braces Is Important

With or without braces, flossing is important to your oral hygiene routine. Food that remains between your teeth can create bacteria, increase tooth decay, cause plaque and tartar build-up, and more. Using floss to clean out the areas between your teeth down to your gum line will decrease future problems. It is also beneficial in helping your braces work more effectively.

Although flossing should be done each time you brush your teeth, we know that can’t always happen. We ask that you commit to flossing thoroughly at least once each day before bed.

You’ll Get Quicker with Practice!

When you first get your braces, learning how to brush and floss should be a top priority. Although you will get faster, plan to spend 10 to 15 minutes each time. Once you develop a flossing routine, it will become a lot easier. The tips and tricks below should help you learn proper flossing techniques.

Using Floss Threaders

A floss threader is a loop of thin material that helps thread floss under the wire on your braces. These disposable tools work with any type of floss and are available wherever dental supplies are sold.

Using a floss threader will also get easier with practice. Here are the basic instructions:

  • Break off 12 to 18 inches of dental floss
  • Insert about 5 inches into the loop on the floss threader
  • Guide the threader under the wire and into the space between the teeth
  • Leaving the floss in place, remove the floss threader
  • Floss normally, being sure to floss around each tooth
  • Repeat the process for all of your teeth

Don’t forget your back teeth and to floss normally above your wires also. If you find the floss is too rough on your gums, which might be tender, consider using dental tape instead. It performs the same function as floss but is gentler on your gums.

Using a Water Flossing Device

If you already own a water flossing device it may be used to clean effectively between your teeth. If you are considering buying one, please check with your orthodontist for the best type to purchase.

When using a water flossing device, the instructions are similar regardless of the model:

  • Add water to the reservoir
  • Use the tapered tip on the flosser, check/adjust the water pressure
  • Leaning over the sink, place the tip into your mouth and turn on the flosser
  • Keeping your lips closed will keep water from water from splashing everywhere
  • Make sure to drain the water from your mouth while flossing
  • Make sure to spray along the gum line and between all your teeth

Brushing before flossing will loosen debris to make flossing easier. You may also use your toothbrush while flossing for stubborn food particles.

Final Thought

Using waxed floss will work better in a floss threader and slips between your teeth easier. Unwaxed floss tends to catch on braces and may leave behind small pieces of floss.
